Lead roofs are iconic. Those dark grey tiles always stand out, no matter what condition they are in. They’re most common on older buildings, like churches and schools, but also plenty of houses, depending on where you live.  

Lead isn’t just for aesthetics. It’s been used for hundreds of years because it’s one of the best materials for roof tiles. It can be reused and recycled, especially if the lead is well looked after. 

Having a lead roof is something to be proud of, and your lead tiles deserve some care and attention every now and then. Keeping them in good condition will make damage less likely, but if they are damaged, we’re the team to call.  

 

Why is Lead Best for Roofs?  

As well as offering incredible longevity compared to mass-produced alternatives, lead is highly resistant to atmospheric corrosion. They can handle even the toughest weather conditions, and prevent leaks, damp, and mould from affecting the rooms below.  

Lead is a more expensive material for roofing, but their extra-long life makes up for the cost in the long term. You might get cheaper tiles for less, but they’ll cost you when they need replacing later on.

They may be tough, but lead roofs aren’t invincible. Tiles can crack, and the flashing between them can come unstuck or fall apart.  

If there are any gaps in your tiles, it won’t take long for water to find its way in. It can take a while to become obvious on the inside, and the longer you ignore it, the harder the fix will be. No matter how bad it becomes, we’re always ready to help. Our lead experts can supply new tiles or even repair the existing ones. They do this quickly, so the issue can be fixed as soon as possible.  

In bad weather, losing a few roof tiles can be common. It’s important to replace these immediately, and a lead specialist will be able to check the condition of the rest of your roof. Be sure to call in the professionals if something doesn’t look right, or it has been a long time since it was last checked.  

You can use sealant or felt on cracked or damaged tiles, but this is only a temporary fix intended to keep your roof dry while you wait on an expert repair.  

Repairing lead flashing is just as important as the tiles themselves. These strips of material connect the tiles together, creating an impenetrable barrier against the elements. If they come unstuck, your roof lining won’t be enough to keep your home dry and mould-free, and it can damage the tiles around it too.
